South African Chenin Blanc Wine Kit – RJS Cru International
This graceful wine is medium-bodied with a pale straw color. The fruity-scented nose has hints of green apple and lemon with a subtle floral bouquet. On the palate, the wine is delightfully refreshing. It pairs well with oysters, scallops, simply cooked fish dishes or fishcakes, quiches or frittatas, onion tart, and mild cheeses.Â
The Chenin Blanc grape originated in the Anjou region of the Loire Valley in France. It is thought to be a natural cross between the Savagnin and Pineau d’Aunis grape varieties. The name “Chenin Blanc” is derived from the French word “chenin,” which means “little white.” The grape has been known by various other names over the years, including Pineau de la Loire and Steen (in South Africa).
Over time, Chenin Blanc spread beyond France and gained popularity in other wine regions around the world. South Africa has embraced Chenin Blanc as one of its signature grapes, and it is the most widely planted white variety in the country. Other countries such as the United States, Australia, New Zealand, and Argentina also cultivate Chenin Blanc, although to a lesser extent. The Loire Valley is still considered the spiritual home of Chenin Blanc, and it continues to be the most important grape variety grown there.
